I'm looking for a cheap web host with a dedicated IP address that is located in the United States. I was going to go with Galaxy visions but upon dealing with their sales/support staff I realized they were a VERY small company that could fold overnight. There is a sea of hosts out there, but not many in the United States that offer dedicated IP addresses for a good price...any suggestions?

Reply:there are load of them and it take hours and hours to wade through the hosting jungle. Most these days offer far more services than you will every need as a developer but then many don't after much after sales service. Nothing worse than being in a situation where you know what you want to try but the hosting plan wont really allow it, and the trouble ticket email has had no reply for days. I have been in this situation myself and pulled out plenty of hair over bad web hosting plans including free ones. To have lots of fun as a developer you will want to have good script acess, MySql to play with databases and a nice catchy domain name. I have reviewed a number of hosting companies on my website and taken int account the what the users of these hosting plans have to say. I have reviewed and then listed all of the available service,s that each has including prices and most come in at well under $10 a month. Some even offer free domain names.

I know this has been asked before, but I've searched many web sites and reviews and I'm still confused. So, I've narrowed it down to Hostmonster, Bluehost, and Lunarpages. I'm a pretty technical guy, but I'm looking for a reliable web host for multiple domains that some will use databases. I'm not so concerned about a "simple" web site creator, as opposed to one that follows the HTML %26amp; CSS standards. I was going to go with 1%26amp;1 after seeing their huge ads in PC Magazine until I read the reviews. Thus, I'm not so concerned about cheap, just a service that is reliable, professional, and popular. In other words, what service would a developer recommend and use?

I may not be as picky (mean that in a good way!) as you are because I definitely don't consider myself a "professional" compared to friends who have web design businesses, but we've been really happy with Host Excellence. ( http://www.hostexcellence.com/templates/... )

There are a ton of paid web hosts out there, and my husband and I exhausted ourselves researching them before making a decision to go with HostExcellence for this site and another one we run. Ultimately, it came down to the fact that we were getting tired and we liked HostExcellence's plans for mulitple domains and the fact that they had a site builder with tons of customizable templates (many of them do, but some of the good ones on the review lists don't). My husband doesn't use the site builder for his -- he does his own code. I use the site builder until I'm more proficient on Nvu. We also liked the amount of storage and bandwidth we were given, among other things. I haven't had a complaint yet, and we've been customers since October 2005. They have excellent 24/7 live chat support that helps me all the time with just about any issue you can imagine. Whenever a service has been down (which has only been a few times), it's either back up before I have a chance to ask about it or it's resolved before I get off live chat with them. They have a ton of tools at your service, we have more e-mails available than we'll ever use, and more bandwidth and storage space than we've come close to dipping into. They have ftp storage and a really easy thing called webshell that makes it pretty simple to do ftp stuff. Php boards, databases, etc. are all available. Good luck!

I updated my webpage a few days ago, and someone in New York said that they were seeing a very old page. Aside from the Cache, do you think that a cheaper hosting provider would do a worse job of getting my website changes out across the web to the different internet providers?

Or maybe it is the person's internet provider that is slow in getting my changes up???

No, the ISP has nothing to do with any of that. If the page is updated on your server, then the changes will be reflected immediately to everyone who visits your site. That person could have been looking at an archived version of your site on another server (like Google's cache) or simply seeing something saved on their computer. Good night!

Reply:base on my experience it either isp or the visitor. i experienced in my previous isp that save websites in their cache and updates it occassionally. so when i upload my website, people with the same isp with me don't see the updates.

the other reason maybe the visitor has not updated its cache in their computer. they have to refresh their browser and sometimes need to delete their cache and temporary internet files then revisit the site.

Reply:you cannot compare web hosting totally on price. if you do that you will regret later on when you know more stuff about online biz. first you need to write what actually you would like to do with your web space. what is your requirement. how many site you want to setup maybe within one or two years. you need to get some knowledge first otherwise you will find yourself have to switch web host or upgrade to higher price plan to do what you want to do. so i suggest don't compare price and try to avoid unlimited domain and unlimited bandwidth. those two are not practical.

I have a small personal webpage and I'm unhappy with my current web hosting company (Brinkster).

Something free or very cheap would be best.

I'd prefer something that doesn't force ads on my pages.

Having my own domain name is *not* important.

Support for languages such as PHP would be nice, but not necessary. Same goes for allowing me to host media files such as MP3s.

Although 1%26amp;1, Godaddy, and all the others list huge benefits, and low cost - they are going for QUANTITY, NOT QUALITY. If you are paying, for example, $2/month and the server that you website is on goes down - do you think that they are really going to care what you have to say? Its only $2 to them.

Both are pretty cheap. 1and1 is nice because they offer free privacy when you register through them. Yahoo! charges around $9.99 or so.

As for hosting...

I bought my hosting through ehost.net and it was on eBay...I got a great plan and I saw some places charging at least $10-$30 dollars a month for the plan I got for $10 for a year. I am happy so far with the hosting, no problems at all. I highly recommend them!

GoDaddy is a bit cheaper when it comes to rock-bottom prices... however, there are some features lacking. You might want to compare it, to, say, HostGator, so you can make an informed choice and at least you'll know what you're missing for that extra $6 a month (I just recently switched from GoDaddy to HostGator myself).

You might also want to consider a reseller account. That way, if you ever find yourself in a position to recommend web hosting to someone else (perhaps a client for whom you're designing a website), you can offer them hosting yourself. One or two of those and your own website will be free (or even earning money).

Other things to consider are the number of databases and web site templates that come with the account, in case you decide to grow your site in the future (Wordpress for blogging, Drupal for content management, etc). In short, you get what you pay for :-)

Fortunately prices have gone way down for good web hosting. I only pay $5.95 a month for my Hostmonster account, and I run 15 web sites off that one account.

I've used Lunarpages and HostMonster, and recommend them both for their features, price, and technical support. They both offer a free domain name and you can host unlimited domains with a single account using HostMonster.

Seems like a scam already I know, but seriously, it's a good program with great prices. Nearly half the spam I get is about hosting programs, so that seems like a waste of time. Should I run more traditional ads in the paper? I personally hate radio ads so that's out, and my budget is on the small side, so what's left?

It seems everywhere you look these days there are people plugging some cheap or discount hosting that they run from their basement. This is a really good program backed by a large vendor. How do you get that across though?

Word of advice, web hosting is already a saturated market. Unless you can charge less than $5 per month, provide 1 or 2 GB of drive space, and have a server availability of 99.99%, I suggest looking into another business.

Reply:not really related, but just a warning in case u didn't know about this. Most regular ISP will not allow you to host a web server from your house. In fact they even block port 80 (which is the default port for the HTTP protocol). You will probably need a tier 1 or tier 2 connection if you want to host anything (or otherwise configure your web server to use another port, but in which case will force the users to type in their url as "www.url.com:portnumber" to connect to the server).

The guy above mentioned Dell, they are decent, but i can't say good, but they are definitively cheap.

I have a few questions

First on average how much bytes does one site a person made has...a person opened his online business, I know it won't be as big of a site as like NFL.com where yea...but on average, how much bytes does one site a person makes has from his own like from scratch??????

My second question is I saw web hosting, now the cheapest I found was 7 bucks a month, free domain, and 3500 gb of disk space...can someone tell me is that a good amount of space for a website or no? A site wit songs, and info ****. like a whole website about an artist?

What with more and more websites being full-blown web applications. For example, let's a shopping cart like osCommerce or ZenCart, a content management system like Drupal or Joomla. Now throw in a good mailing list manager (for all those opt-in newsletters to promote the site and your products)... say, PHPList.

All of these things are PHP applications that rely on data being stored on MySQL database.

The critical bottleneck here will be CPU USAGE. On a shared hosting environment, anything that hogs more than, say, 4% of CPU time, is likely to get banned/blocked.

Which means that really knowing how to configure the web application(s) that you're using for maximum efficiency will be crucial.

I've got an angelfire account, it's pretty naff but is there much better for free? I'm only hosting a small collection of specialist stories and a few photos per page. It's sort of free hosting, but you are limited to a subdomain on googlepages %26amp; geo has ads on your website - otherwise I would use http://www.interkeys.com/tophosts to get one for a few bucks a month with 750 GIGs of bandwidth and rich with features.. you will be much better off. Hosting is cheap nowadays.

It's up to you how developed a site you want and if you want to use your own domain name. Having your own domain name + your own hosting gives much more credibility to your site and allows you to be more flexible (such as adding google adsense to make money, affiliate links etc).

Last August I was looking for a cheap hosting solution for a one page website, and chose these cowboys.

I have never been able to upload a single page to my alloctated domain, and each time I emailed them I was informed. 'Our engineers have rectified the problem.'

In the end I just told them to get lost and used another hosting service.

But now, despite my pointing out that I could never access their services they are threatening me with debt collectors unless I pay up. It's only a small amount, so they have added another year on for not cancelling by registered letter, although I did cancel by email, the same way I signed up.

I have a whole file of emails to them asking for help to access my domain, but never had a satisfactory reply.

I cannot believe I'm the only one to have problems with them.

Any advice appreciated.

Here is how to change with no downtime

1. The first step is to find the new host you want to be with and join them. Make sure not to cancel with your old hosting provider, and do not tell them you will be canceling. For the time being you switching host needs to be kept a secret from them, or they could terminate your site early and cause downtime.

2. At this point you should have hosting accounts with two hosting providers the old and the new one. You will now upload your entire site from the old host to the new one. This can be done by connecting to their ftp and downloading all your files. Then connecting to the new hosts ftp and uploading all your files.

3. After you have all your files on both hosting accounts you will change your domain names dns. Your new host should have provided you with their domain name servers (dns). If they haven't contact them to find out what dns you should use for your domain name.

Dns usually looks like this:

ns1.thehostsnames.com

ns2.thehostsnames.com

Once you know what dns to use on your domain name you will go to wherever you purchased the domain name from to make the changes. If you purchased your domain name from your host you usually will need to ask them to make the dns changes for you. You will tell them this.... "Hello my domain with you is www yourdomain.com my username is username and my password password. please change my domain names dns to ns1.thednsyoureceived.com and ns2.thednsyoureceived.com

4. Once your dns changes have been made you will need to wait two days before your site will load off the new host. During this two day period your dns is prorogating world wide, and your site will be bouncing from the old host to the new host every other minute randomly. Once the two days is up your site will only be loading off the new host.

5. When your dns has updated you will now contact your host you were moving from and cancel your account with them.

Reply:Cheapest is not the way to go for a small online business, though it would be alright for a personal site. Cheap hosts overload their servers, so if you own a business, customers will come, get annoyed with the slowness, and leave.

If you are doing a personal site, unless you have some insane resource needs (like gigabytes of space, and tens of hundreds of gigabytes of bandwith) then you should be able to use free hosts. Just search for free web host and you'll get tons.

I'm opening a web designing company. Say I have some clients who need websites. Now I don't own a server of my own, I just know how to make websites. So I use a hosting site as my server, for example www.uk2.net provide cheap hosting. So now, for each client I get, I buy 50gb hosting space on uk2.net and assign them a domain. But I will be advertising in my website packages that each package include 50gb of hosting space. Is this legal? Since the hosting space is actually coming from a different company?

If you need highly scalable web hosting which can sustain millions of visitors, then best way is to implement highly scalable system that can grow along as the user base grows. I have done something like this for my clients

You can go in for clustering with load balancing servers. As the load increases you can add up more servers without creating downtime. Since this is a higher end solution I think it will be generally expensive and it needs lot of expertise. You could workout this deal cheaper by contacting www.netandhost.com where they have got custom solution with Linux. As the load increase you can add more servers to the clusters and this makes the solution again cheaper. They have got a solution which is much similar to what google is using. It works out very well. Apart from this take a dedicated bandwidth so that you can avoid the data transfer plan. You wont have these kind of solution in web. So you need to write email to them.

I want to start an ebusiness. But It's very confusing. I want to accept credit cards but I don't understand all the techno language. Or how it all works. some has no setup fees some has setup free somewhere around USD15 - USD35. some only host 1 domain some host 10 domain some host unlimited domain. some charge USD5 for domain name renewal some charge USD15 renewal fee. some gives 10G space some gives 100 G space although the monthly price is the same.

some give free advertising credit but some don't. some give 1 mysql database some gives 50 mysql database some gives unlimited mysql. so i hope you got my point.

Actually, the most economical "budget" web hosting plans from most companies REQUIRE you to pay for a year in advance. Or bi-annually at least.

For example, at my favorite web host, it's $6.95 a month, but you get billed $83.40 for the full year. Not the absolute cheapest (GoDaddy is $3.99 I think) -- but the best bang for the buck in terms of both features and support.

If you're using it for a particular profession like mortgage broker, real estate agent, auto site, insurance, etc., look into templates specific to that industry; they advertise with the specific associations usually, but do a search too. It'll save you a ton of update time and they'll often keep your site updated with pertinent information (like mortgage rates) which will mean you'll be able to do more business and work on your site less.

Honestly, I'm not entirely sure who to recommend. But it will probably depend on how the radio feature works. For instance, does it require PHP, MySQL, ASP or some other server technology? If so then that will help you narrow down your choices. Also, what's your budget for this site? Are you looking for a dedicated server or just something to get you up and running online?

For unlimted listeners, you'd also want to make sure you have enough bandwidth and that if you start to creep towards your limit, that you can quickly increase the available bandwidth. Most good hosts can just change your hosting plan on the fly to increase the available bandwidth, so this shouldn't be too much of a problem.

I know that's more questions than answers, but those are definitely some things to consider.
