Most these days offer far more services than you will every need as a developer but then many don't after much after sales service. Nothing worse than being in a situation where you know what you want to try but the hosting plan wont really allow it, and the trouble ticket email has had no reply for days. I have been in this situation myself and pulled out plenty of hair over bad web hosting plans including free ones. To have lots of fun as a developer you will want to have good script acess, MySql to play with databases and a nice catchy domain name. I have reviewed a number of hosting companies on my website and taken int account the what the users of these hosting plans have to say. I have reviewed and then listed all of the available service,s that each has including prices and most come in at well under $10 a month. Some even offer free domain names.

Its pretty user friendly, they give you a free domain name, and most important for me is they allow you to host all your webpages under one plan. I know this has been asked before, but I've searched many web sites and reviews and I'm still confused. So, I've narrowed it down to Hostmonster, Bluehost, and Lunarpages. I'm a pretty technical guy, but I'm looking for a reliable web host for multiple domains that some will use databases. I'm not so concerned about a "simple" web site creator, as opposed to one that follows the HTML %26amp; CSS standards. I was going to go with 1%26amp;1 after seeing their huge ads in PC Magazine until I read the reviews. Thus, I'm not so concerned about cheap, just a service that is reliable, professional, and popular. In other words, what service would a developer recommend and use?

I may not be as picky (mean that in a good way!) as you are because I definitely don't consider myself a "professional" compared to friends who have web design businesses, but we've been really happy with Host Excellence. ( http://www.hostexcellence.com/templates/... )
There are a ton of paid web hosts out there, and my husband and I exhausted ourselves researching them before making a decision to go with HostExcellence for this site and another one we run. Ultimately, it came down to the fact that we were getting tired and we liked HostExcellence's plans for mulitple domains and the fact that they had a site builder with tons of customizable templates (many of them do, but some of the good ones on the review lists don't). My husband doesn't use the site builder for his -- he does his own code. I use the site builder until I'm more proficient on Nvu. We also liked the amount of storage and bandwidth we were given, among other things. I haven't had a complaint yet, and we've been customers since October 2005. They have excellent 24/7 live chat support that helps me all the time with just about any issue you can imagine. Whenever a service has been down (which has only been a few times), it's either back up before I have a chance to ask about it or it's resolved before I get off live chat with them. They have a ton of tools at your service, we have more e-mails available than we'll ever use, and more bandwidth and storage space than we've come close to dipping into. They have ftp storage and a really easy thing called webshell that makes it pretty simple to do ftp stuff. Php boards, databases, etc. are all available. Good luck!

Does my website hosting company effect how fast the web updates your page in other states?
I updated my webpage a few days ago, and someone in New York said that they were seeing a very old page. Aside from the Cache, do you think that a cheaper hosting provider would do a worse job of getting my website changes out across the web to the different internet providers?
Or maybe it is the person's internet provider that is slow in getting my changes up???

No, the ISP has nothing to do with any of that. If the page is updated on your server, then the changes will be reflected immediately to everyone who visits your site. That person could have been looking at an archived version of your site on another server (like Google's cache) or simply seeing something saved on their computer. Good night!

the other reason maybe the visitor has not updated its cache in their computer. they have to refresh their browser and sometimes need to delete their cache and temporary internet files then revisit the site.

For example, if you decide to host your website elsewhere, they may give you a lot of run around about making the necessary changes to your domain, or about allowing you to transfer the domain to a different registrar.
Also, if they decide to cancel your HOSTING account for any reason, eg someone reports your website as being offensive (without proving it is) or lapse in payment, they may also take your DOMAIN hostage and try to resell it to you for hundreds or thousands.
In fact, with some registrars, you may not even own the domain you register, which they will only point out to you when you attempt to transfer it to a different registrar.
With all that said, I use Domainsite.com for all my domains (over 50).
For hosting I would recommend Dreamhost.com.

cheap web hosting and domain name services will likely be alot more unreliable than more established web hosting and also will have a meagre bandwidth limit that may cause problems if you get a decent amount of traffic.

I bought my hosting through ehost.net and it was on eBay...I got a great plan and I saw some places charging at least $10-$30 dollars a month for the plan I got for $10 for a year. I am happy so far with the hosting, no problems at all. I highly recommend them!

GoDaddy is a bit cheaper when it comes to rock-bottom prices... however, there are some features lacking. You might want to compare it, to, say, HostGator, so you can make an informed choice and at least you'll know what you're missing for that extra $6 a month (I just recently switched from GoDaddy to HostGator myself).
You might also want to consider a reseller account. That way, if you ever find yourself in a position to recommend web hosting to someone else (perhaps a client for whom you're designing a website), you can offer them hosting yourself. Other things to consider are the number of databases and web site templates that come with the account, in case you decide to grow your site in the future (Wordpress for blogging, Drupal for content management, etc). In short, you get what you pay for :-)

I've used Lunarpages and HostMonster, and recommend them both for their features, price, and technical support. They both offer a free domain name and you can host unlimited domains with a single account using HostMonster.
